Cornerstones of an ecologically sustainable welfare concept

20.04.2013

The GWS has published the results of the three-year research order "Cornerstones of an ecologically sustainable welfare concept as a basis for ecopolitical innovation and transformation processes". The project - funded by the German Ministry of Environment - has been carried out cooperatively by FFU (Berlin: Roland Zieschank), FEST (Heidelberg: Prof. Dr. Diefenbacher) and GWS (Prof. Dr. Bernd Meyer [&] Gerd Ahlert). Two of the project deliverables now are also available in English language.

Due to the fact that until now there has been a lack of sufficiently well-founded cross-sectional studies concerning the alternative reform concepts resp. strategies of sustainable welfare and growth (green growth, zero growth, degrowth) currently under discussion a comprehensive analysis has been carried out by the project team. The GWS Disscussion Paper 13/1 presents the results of this synopsis. The main aim of the synopsis was to identify differentiated and exemplary starting points for an ecopolitically viable and - in the sense of the study - measurable theoretical modeling concept of sustainable welfare.

Beyond that in GWS Discussion Paper 13/2 the basic structures and political implications of such a sustainable welfare model have been derived. The proposed theoretical model illustrates the environmental policy by showing its effect on people's welfare and the use of the natural world and should assist national environmental policy in its decision-making. The model provides the reference points for the development of a sustainable welfare concept, which can be used as a political action plan in the context of environmental policy.
