The Gesellschaft fuer Wirtschaftliche Strukturforschung (GWS mbH, Institute of Economic Structures Research) was founded in 1996 by Prof. Dr. Bernd Meyer. The analysis of changes of industry structures in the context of macroeconomic development is the main focus of this private consulting and research institute.
It has developed a unique system of macroeconomic forecasting models that distinguish different industries and regions. The underlying modelling philosophy is that agents operate under conditions of bounded rationality on imperfect markets. The parameters of the models are estimated econometrically and based on official statistics. GWS is specialised on the development and application of economic-environmental models with a deep disaggregation of sectors, energy carriers and kinds of resources. For the German economy GWS has constructed the multisectoral macroeconometric forecasting models INFORGE and PANTA RHEI, the latter enables the analysis of environmental questions in a macroeconomic context. The forecasting model INFORGE is the German contribution to the linked system of international macro/interindustry models. Besides, GWS has developed the global energy-economy-environment model GINFORS, covering 53 countries / regions. A graphical user interface allows easy access to data and models. The GINFORS model illustrates that modeling at an industrial and professional level is possible and can be easily transferred from one generation to the next. Further, regional models for countries like Russia, South Africa and Tunisia have been developed. The models of GWS are used as instruments for policy evaluation by national (German ministries and other institutions) as well as international authorities (Anglo-German Foundation, Different DGs of the EU Commission, Asian Development Bank, GIZ). Other clients are private firms and associations, which use the models as forecasting instruments. Furthermore GWS has expertise in data evaluation and the development of monitoring systems. GWS has developed a graphical user interface for the models that allows for access and application of the modelling tools. At present, the GWS staff comprises of 20 research associates, all of whom hold a university/ college degree in economics or social sciences and who focus on different areas within the GWS fields of research. Because of the different core competences and widespread experiences of our personnel, we are able to analyse the given tasks from different perspectives and develop and implement comprehensive solutions. The senior staff of the GWS consists of two managing directors and partners, Prof. Dr. Bernd Meyer and Dr. Christian Lutz as well as six further partners, namely Gerd Ahlert, Martin Distelkamp, Frank Hohmann, Dr. Ulrike Lutz, Mark Meyer and Dr. Marc Ingo Wolter. |
